Clomid (clomiphene) was one of the original drugs used in post-cycle-therapy to stave off gynocomastia and raise the body’s natural testosterone levels. This drug is not a steroid; it is a synthetic estrogen used as a fertility drug. In men it can work as both an anti-estrogen, and a gonadotropic stimulant. Male steroid users find that it can work quite well to prevent gynecomastia while taking steroids that aromatise. It also is used to bring the body's natural testosterone levels back up to normal after a steroid cycle. The clomid acts directly on the pituitary gland to stimulate more gonadotropins. Women have used this drug to reduce the amount of estrogen in their systems, usually to harden up before a show. But in some cases women suffer estrogen deficiencies that can cause a number of side effects. No adverse reactions have been seen in males who used this drug. It can be quite effective, but is not favoured over HCG or Nolvadex in these areas. A dosage of 50 milligram per day for short cycles is most often seen.
Clomid has been observed to be especially effective when the body's own testosterone production, due to the intake of anabolic/androgenic steroids, is suppressed. Clomid normalizes the testosterone level and the spermatogenesis (sperm development) within 10-14 days, in most of the cases. It is for this reason that Clomid is primarily taken after steroids are discontinued. Bringing the testosterone production to a normal level at such times as quickly as possible becomes important so that the loss of strength and muscle mass is brought to the very minimum.
A combination of Clomid with HCG or using Clomid after the intake of HCG ensures better results. Clomid, acting on the hypothalamus and the hypophysis, regenerates the entire regulating cycle while HCG imitates the effect of the luteinizing hormone (LH) which in turn stimulates the Ledigs Cells to produce more testosterone. Since HCG, unlike Clomid, leads to a distinctly elevated plasmatestosterone level within a few hours, many athletes first take HCG and follow it up with Clomid (see also HCG).
Male users generally find that a daily intake of 50-100 mg (1-2 tablets) over a four to six week period will bring testostero ne production back to an acceptable level. A very common regime of dosing is; 300 md/day 1, 100 mg/day for days 2-11, and 50 mg/day for days 12-21. This raise in testosterone should occur slowly but evenly throughout the period of intake. Since an immediate boost in testosterone is often desirable, many prefer to combine Clomid with HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) for the first week or two after the steroids have been removed. The kick-start from HCG also helps to restore the normal ability for the testes to respond to endogenous LH, which may be hindered for some time after the cycle is ended due to a prolonged state of inactivity. Once the HCG is stopped, the user continues treatment with Clomid alone. HCG should not be used for longer than two or three weeks though, as the resulting increased testosterone and estrogen levels may again initiate negative feedback inhibition at the hypothalamus. When planning your ancillary drug program, it is also important to remember that injectable steroids can stay active for a long duration. Using ancillary drugs the first week after a long acting injectable like Sustanon has been stopped may prove to be wholly ineffective. Instead, the athlete should wait for two to three weeks, to a point where androgen levels will be diminishing. Here the body will be primed and ready to restore
testosterone production.
The side effects of Clomid are rare at reasonable dosages. The possible side effects are climacteric hot flashes and occasional visual disturbances that can result in blurred vision, flickering lights or flashing. If visual disturbances are noticed it is advised to discontinue Clomid. Liver dysfunction cannot be excluded; and are however, very unlikely in women. Enlargement of the ovaries and abdominal pain can occur since Clomid stimulates the ovaries. Multiple pregnancies are a possibility with Clomid.
